Topic 4
Reaching the Right Audience
Within topic four 'Target unlocked' we will be exploring how advertisers always reach for the right audience, this is called a 'target audience'.
Learning Aims: I can define a target audience and identify the specific audience an advertisement is directed towards. I can critique how an advertisement represents people, places or concepts to reach a particular audience.
Success: I have looked at the teacher example of target audience, looked at the advertisement choices and answered the questions in the padlet.
Teacher Example
Target audiences are groups of people that an advertisement wants to appeal to. Target audience works together with the purpose. Advertisements can inform, entertain and or persuade for commercial, educational and artistic purposes. Once you figure out the purpose of the advert often you can identify the target audience.
A target audience can include:
- Age (teeenagers, young children, adults)
- Location (where the intended audience lives)
- Education (no education, very intelligent, a little educated)
- Gender (male, female or other)
- Marital status (single, married, divorced, relationship)
Below I have included an example of a unicef advertisement I have examined to better understand who the target audience might be.
Step One: Students I have included a hyperlink and a photograph that you can click on. These will direct you to a website where I have collected five different advertisments. Take a look at all of these and select ONE that you would like to examine.

Step Two: Once you have selected your advertisement you will be analysing. Please answer the three questions below and post your response into the Padlet.
Question 1: Within your selected advertisment who do you think is the target audience and why?
Question 2: Describe how the advertiser has adjusted logos, pathos and/or ethos for the targeted audience.
Question 3: How has the advertiser represented people, places, events and/or concepts to intentionally target a specific audience?
Congratulations! You have now completed this week's unit on advertising. We will be continuing our topic on advertising when you return to class next week.
